Traveling with Type 1 Diabetes takes planning, but it should never stop you from exploring the world with your family. Whether you’re heading out for a weekend trip or a week-long vacation, a little preparation can turn a stressful journey into a smooth, worry-free adventure.

Plan Ahead and Pack With Confidence

Before you leave, make sure you have more than enough of everything — insulin, test strips, CGM sensors, pump supplies, and low blood sugar snacks. Aim to pack at least double what you normally use, just in case your trip is extended or items are delayed.

If you’re flying, pack all your diabetes supplies in your carry-on. Keep them in a clearly labeled bag, and bring a printed doctor’s note if you use an insulin pump or CGM. Most TSA agents are familiar with diabetes devices, but it helps to be prepared for questions or hand screenings.

It’s also a good idea to research pharmacies and hospitals near your destination, especially if you’re traveling out of state. Knowing where to turn if something goes wrong can provide peace of mind for the whole trip.

Keep Routine Where You Can

Time zone changes, long car rides, or new foods can all impact blood sugar. Try to maintain your usual routines as much as possible. Stick to familiar meals, check blood sugar often, and don’t skip doses even during busy travel days. Let others in your travel group know about your needs so you’re not managing it all alone.

With the right mindset and a solid plan, travel can become a source of joy — not stress. You deserve to make memories without fear getting in the way. TOADS is here to help you prepare and thrive, wherever your journey takes you.
