A new diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes can feel like the world has suddenly shifted. Whether it’s your child, a loved one, or yourself, the flood of medical terms, supplies, and daily responsibilities can feel like too much to take in at once. But the truth is, you don’t have to figure everything out right away. The most important thing you can do today is start.
Focus on the First Steps
It helps to simplify what matters most in the early days. Begin by learning how to check blood sugar, give insulin, and recognize the signs of low or high blood sugar. These may seem overwhelming at first, but with support and practice, they become manageable routines. Keep fast-acting glucose nearby and talk to your care provider about what supplies are essential to have on hand.
Build Your Local Support Team
You’ll need medical care, but you’ll also benefit from emotional and practical support. Reach out to others who understand life with Type 1. That might mean talking with a diabetes educator, meeting other parents through TOADS, or getting connected with support groups in your area. Let your child’s school staff know what’s going on so they can create a safe plan for the classroom, playground, and cafeteria.
Give Yourself Grace
There’s no perfect way to do this. You’ll have days when things go smoothly and days when it feels like everything is falling apart. That’s okay. You’re learning something life-changing, and no one expects you to be an expert on day one. The most important thing is knowing you don’t have to do this alone.
TOADS was created for moments just like this. Whether you need supplies, answers, or just someone to talk to, we’re here for you every step of the way.

TOADS exists to walk alongside individuals and families living with Type 1 Diabetes. Whether you’re looking for help, hope, or a way to give back, we’re here to make that next step easier. From resources and support to events and volunteer opportunities, there’s a place for you here.
